Driver Education

Reminder that students and parents will be able to pick up their N.C. Driving Eligibility Certificate at their high school. Please call the school for more information.

They will need to bring their FORM 452 DRIVER EDUCATION CERTIFICATE; that certifies that he or she has satisfactorily completed an approved course in driver education, Social Security card AND their birth certificate (the names on both forms must match).

We will have our next online course in February or March 2026. Updates will be shared on this website.

All students must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct for Iredell-Statesville School students or face possible dismissal from the Driver Education program.

If an individual wants a driving license before the age of 18 years of age, the state of North Carolina requires that students successfully complete thirty (30) hours of classroom instruction followed by six (6) hours of Behind the Wheel training.

WHEN can a student take driver's ed?

Students must be at least 14 1/2 years old on the first day of your selected class to be eligible to participate in the Driver Education program.
Students must also be in the 9th grade and under the age of 18 years of age. (G.S. 20-88.1)
Students are strongly encouraged to attend classroom instruction as soon as they become 14 and 1/2 years of age. Every effort will be made for them to receive the Behind the Wheel training by their 15th birthday. Students who choose to wait will be served as space is available.

WHO can take driver's ed?

All students, ONLY if enrolled in public, private, charter, or licensed home school within the Iredell-Statesville School boundaries.
To be enrolled in a class, please show up on the first day of that scheduled class. No student who meets the current criteria will be turned away.
Non-public school students must take Driver Education in the school district that surrounds their school.

Attendance:

There are 2 components - In-Class Requirements and Behind-the-Wheel Requirements
The law requires students to attend 30 hours of In-Class sessions.
No absences, tardiness or early dismissal is allowed for any class. You must be in class the full session to receive credit for that day. Attendance issues/emergencies should be discussed with the teacher for make-up time and work. This class is offered to students at least ten times a year.

Classroom Requirements:

Students must arrange transportation to and from the classroom. Students must be picked up promptly. No loitering on campus.
Classroom requirements must be successfully completed with a minimum average grade of 70 or above.
Students are required to attend all classes. No tardiness or early dismissal is allowed for any class. You must be in class the full session to receive credit for that day. Attendance issues/emergencies should be discussed with the teacher for make-up time and work.
If a student drops a class or does not show up they will not be able to retake the class until space is available.
If you have plans that conflict with class attendance, you should wait and take another class.
Students will be charged a replacement fee of $20 for any lost, stolen, or damaged textbook. Students will not be scheduled for Behind the Wheel training until the book is returned or the fee is paid in full.
During the classroom phase, parent/guardian must complete a Restricted Permit form. All information must be complete including the scheduled eye check from the DMV. This completed permit is required before the student can be scheduled for Behind the Wheel training.
During the classroom phase, a DMV examiner will conduct an eye check for all students who have completed the Restricted Permit form. Students absent on the day of the eye check must wait until the next scheduled class when the DMV examiner returns.
If a student fails the eye check, you are issued an 804 form to be completed by a Vision Specialist. This form must be returned to the Driver Education teacher or the school office before the student can be scheduled for Behind the Wheel training.

Behind-the-Wheel Requirements

Behind-the-Wheel Training Requirements:

After a student has successfully completed all classroom requirements, every effort will be made to contact parents, near the time they will be driven, to schedule your student for driving training.
Students may be driven after school, on Saturdays, or during vacation days.
Students will be driven from oldest to youngest and according to the date of classroom phase completion. There is a possibility a younger student may be driven first if an older student could not be located, couldn't drive on the requested date, or to save gas due to home location.
Make sure all student phone numbers are current. Students should notify their school Driver Education site coordinator of any change of address, phone number, or transfer to another school. Messages for the site coordinator can be left in the school office.
The driving teacher will provide dates, times, where to meet the teacher and other additional information when they contact the student.
