About Us

At Iredell-Statesville Schools (I-SS), we are dedicated to providing every student with the support they need to thrive. Our Exceptional Children (EC) Department serves over 2,700 students aged 3 to 21 who have diverse learning needs. We are committed to offering inclusive, high-quality education tailored to each child's unique strengths and challenges.

Our Commitment

In alignment with the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and North Carolina's Public School Law (Article 9), I-SS ensures that students with disabilities receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). This means we strive to educate students alongside their non-disabled peers whenever possible, providing necessary supports and services to facilitate their success.

Comprehensive Support Services

We offer a continuum of services to meet individual student needs, including:

  • Inclusive Classroom Support: Assistance within general education settings.

  • Specialized Resource Instruction: Tailored programs for students requiring more intensive support.

  • Related Services: Such as speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

  • Behavioral and Emotional Support: Interventions and behavior support services.

  • Transition Planning: Preparing students for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living.

Whenever feasible, students receive services in their home schools or district approved school of choice. For those needing specialized settings, programs are located within school campuses to promote interaction with age-appropriate peers.

Early Identification and Intervention

Through our Child Find initiative, we actively identify and evaluate children aged 3 to 21 who may have disabilities and require special education services. This includes children in private schools, those who are homeschooled, and highly mobile populations such as migrant and homeless children. Our goal is to ensure early support and intervention for every child in need.

Family Engagement and Resources

We believe that collaboration with families is essential to student success. Our EC Department provides resources, training, and support to empower parents and guardians as active participants in their child's education. We encourage families to engage with our team to discuss concerns, celebrate progress, and plan for the future.
