Media Centers
The mission of the Iredell Statesville Schools Media Center program is to provide a safe, welcoming space in which all students and staff have access to information that meets their educational needs. It is our goal to give our students the future ready tools that they need to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.

What is it?
Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed to encourage students to read quality literature. Students read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competitions are similar in style to the TV series Family Feud, but the structure and format of the competitions may vary depending on the needs, resources and personal preferences at various school sites or at the regional/state competition levels.
How it all began
In the 1930's Battle of the Books was a Chicago radio program. Today it is a reading incentive program in elementary, middle and high schools across the country. All of the questions in the competition begin with the words "In which book" and the correct answer is always the title and author of the book. This program works at the individual school level as well as at the interscholastic and district wide levels. Classroom teachers, reading specialists and library media specialists spend many hours choosing books and writing questions for each year's battles.

Policies
In the Iredell Statesville Media Centers, our students' First Amendment right to read and receive information is upheld to the best of the media coordinator's ability and in accordance with district guidelines. Students are therefore free to access all resources located in the media center. The only people allowed to restrict the content our students' read are their parents/guardians. We encourage you to be aware of what your students are checking out from the school media center and monitor according to your own personal guidelines. Iredell-Statesville Schools is in partnership with the Iredell County Public Library and students may check out resources and have them delivered to them at our school. Again, we encourage your engagement with your student to know what they are reading. If you wish to opt-out of having your student checking out certain book titles please contact your school media coordinator to make arrangements.
