What is Social-Emotional Learning?
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. Individuals with strong social-emotional skills are more equipped to handle everyday challenges and even benefit socially, academically and professionally. The 5 main competencies that SEL curriculums aim to equip students with include skills for self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision making and relationship skills. Research outcome support that SEL leads to improved academic outcomes, improved behavior and improved overall school climate.
