Cool Spring Project Overview

Cool Spring Elementary Project Overview:

Cool Spring is a K-5 rural elementary school located on Hwy 64 East of Statesville. This eastern part of the county is growing albeit slower than the southern part of the county.

The school serves 395 students in a facility, which ranges in age from the early 1930's to 1996 when the last addition was added. Most of the classroom buildings are separated from each other and were built 1950 or before.

The majority of the buildings are at the end of their life cycle for the type of structures and present on-going challenges to keep them maintained and operating efficiently. The classrooms and auxiliary areas do not meet current program standards for square footage, 21st Century technology or support space.

The plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems cannot provide the necessary power requirements and learning environment expected in today's modern classroom. Heating, cooling, and bathroom facilities are inadequate for the population.

Parking and traffic flow has been an on-going problem for the school and the public traveling along Hwy 64 in front of the school. Bus traffic, car traffic and general access to the school are limited and do not flow smoothly.

Cool Spring will have all but the newer 1996 building demolished and replaced with a modern building. A new full-size gym, new classroom space, specialized classroom space, circulation space and other renovations will be added to the existing 1996 building. Road improvements, water and fire line improvements, HVAC upgrades and Roof renovations are also included. The new construction and improvements will bring the capacity up to 600-650.
